Our To The Edge And Back Again Series continues with Part IV; Divine Intervention. This is an ongoing series about the journey of “Kayleena” and her experiences she had to endure before she experienced her Spiritual Awakening. We are proud to present the profound true life story of this courageous woman. We hope her story will inspire you, as it did for us when we first heard her words, to believe anything is possible regardless of the hurdles you may have to overcome to achieve success in your life. And, her journey continues…
The first three months on Maui were the best. When my landlord sold the house and everyone had to go, 45 days just wasn’t long enough to find another place I could afford so I ended up moving into my Toyota Carrola! That first night was devastating. I didn’t know where to go, I didn’t know what to do…but for some reason unknown to me, I relived my D.O.S. accident that happened in 1986 that night. I’ve told this story before and some people say it was “Divine Intervention” that saved me, and I’m inclined to agree.
I had a 79 formula with a 350 engine I was tooling down the highway in when the throttle stuck. I pumped the gas hoping it would release, big mistake; it went down farther and stayed there. I was reaching 85mph in morning rush hour traffic. I was coming up on cars in both lanes and had nowhere to go. I thought if I could get to the curb and down shift I could slow the car down before shutting it off which would have locked up my breaks and steering. I hit loose gravel in the curb and it sent me in a wicked fish tail which then threw me onto thick, wet grass. I knew there was no stopping in that stuff. I was headed straight for a line of huge trees. I was going to die I thought and for a split second I felt fear. But it was instantly replaced by a peaceful calm. Then the sound went away and everything went into extreme slow motion. Was this Divine Intervention? I pulled my foot back, didn’t even try to hit the brakes, my hands fell away from the steering wheel and I started to slowly fall to my right down to the seat and fell asleep…or at least that’s what it felt like.
I’m inhaling this deep breath and a soft female voice tells me not to open my eyes while she pours warm water on my face to clean it. I’m soaking wet and covered with mud from head to toe. People are cheering and doing the hi-five, I’m in an ambulance. I felt fine, I didn’t know I had a 3 1/2 inch gash in my head till the Doc in the ER started sewing it up. I didn’t know I had a crease in my face from the temple to my jaw until I was able to look in the mirror. This divine intervention happened so gently I never even thought about what just happened to me till I went to the Police Department to get my license a week later.
I walked into the Police Department and told the female officer behind the desk my name and what I came for and she said: “You’re Kayleena?” “Hey everyone, come here, this is Kayleena” as she waves to other officers which come from around the corner. Three male officers start to introduce themselves to me and one shakes my hand and the whole time I’m thinking, do they always do this for accident victims? The one shaking my hand says, “Girl you are lucky” and I respond with “yeah, I could have been hurt allot worse”. They all look at each other with utter confusion on their faces and the female officer says “you mean you don’t know?” Know what i say, “you were DOS” she says. I knew what DOA meant but just shrugged my shoulders at DOS. She says “you were dead on the scene”. I said “no way”, she says, “yes you were, I took the call”. At that point I nearly fainted. I read the report an eye witness had filled out. I was ejected from the car landing 150 away, landing face down in a swamp. Divine Intervention made me land in the safest possible spot.
Hitting a tree line head on at 85mph not wearing my seat belt, I should have gone through the windshield but was ejected out the driver side window instead. I went to see the car…or what was left of it. The engine was disintegrated; you couldn’t even tell there was an engine. The car not only hit head on but also flipped up and smashed the roof of the car down onto the tops of the seats. The steering wheel was also pushed all the way back into the seat. If I had my seat belt on I would have been broken up beyond repair…Divine Intervention had to be at play! The nearest ambulance service was 15 minutes away from the crash site, adding another 5 minutes to get through the morning traffic. I was dead for at least 20 minutes and never knew it!
The only thing I did know was how “Different” I felt after wards. It felt like a candle was lit inside me. It was a warm, calm feeling and even though I didn’t see a glow it felt like it was there and those first few steps I took when I was able to get up felt like I was walking on a cloud. I knew my feet where touching the floor but I had to look to make sure because I couldn’t feel the floor underneath my feet. I never saw, heard or felt the accident because Divine Intervention had “put me to sleep” seconds before impact. People ask me what death feels like and I say it feels exactly like sleep. I didn’t see a light or feel like I was in a tunnel but I did feel like an angel was with me the whole time I was “dead” keeping me safe, and wait till you find out WHO that guardian angel was…
